The above T- AT14 Turbocharger's cross-sectional drawing shows that the T- AT14 turbocharger is consisted of the turbine and compressor, and the thrust bearing and two journal bearings which make the axial and radial forces respectively becoming possible. From static section view, T-AT14 turbocharger consists of the comprssor casing, bearing casing and turbine casing.
A turbine housing (casing) includes a central aperture for containing a turbine blade assembly and directing exhaust gases past the turbine blades in a turbocharger. The turbine casing is of cast iron. Some casings are water cooled which complicates the casting. Water cooled casings are necessary for turbochargers with ball and roller bearings with their own integral LO supply (to keep the LO cool). Modern turbochargers with externally lubricated journal bearings have uncooled casings. This leads to greater overall efficiency as less heat energy is rejected to cooling water and is available for the exhaust gas boiler.
