The sealing devices of the exhaust gas turbocharger is divided into two types: gas seal and oil seal.
The function of the gas seal is to prevent leakage of compressed air at the compressor end and gas exhaust gas at the turbine end. A large amount of leakage of compressed air at the compressor end will reduce the boosting efficiency; leakage of the exhaust gas at the turbine end will cause the turbine power to drop, and high temperature gas leaking into the bearing housing will contaminate the lubricating oil and damage the bearing.
The function of the oil seal is to prevent leakage of lubricating oil in the booster bearing housing. Leakage of lubricating oil not only increases its consumption and affects bearing lubrication, but also causes the temperature of the gas to rise and even burn the turbine blades due to leakage of oil into the turbine inlet casing.
Therefore, a good sealing device is an indispensable part of the normal and reliable operation of the exhaust gas turbocharger.
The sealing device is divided into three types according to the structure: contact type, piston ring type and labyrinth type. Piston ring seals are commonly used in small boosters as an oil seal. There are many types of labyrinth seals, axial and radial labyrinth seal for the turbocharger used as a gas seal. The smaller the gap between the gas seal sheets, the better the sealing effect. When a pressurized air is introduced from the compressor end to the gas seal, the sealing effect is enhanced.
